“Technology Absorption by Innovative Small and Medium Enterprises” - Knowledge Economy Forum (KEF VII)

Bucharest, June 24th, 2008 - The seventh annual Knowledge Economy Forum (KEF VII) on “Technology Absorption by Innovative Small and Medium Enterprises” that took  place in Ancona, Italy on June 17-19, 2008  enjoyed a large participation from 22 countries, including: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bosnia- Herzegovina, China, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, FRY Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The Romanian delegation composed of nine representatives from the Government, various ministries, national agencies and research institutes.

Ancona - KE VII


The 2008 Ancona Forum built on themes discussed during previous events, while discussing new dimensions related in particular to the role of government in supporting small and medium sized companies (SMEs). The discussions in the Forum helped representatives from ECA countries understand the implications and relevance of the innovative SME experience with regards to the benefits of cooperation between larger firms and SMEs as well as the interaction among SMEs that leads to new product development, process and service innovation and what it takes to government to facilitate such cooperation.
The Forum addressed these and other key issues, including:

  • Globalization and Technology Absorption
  • Technology Absorption Channels
  • Policies for Regional Innovation
  • Exploring the Marche Region’s Experience: Integrating SMEs in Supply Chains
  • Achieving & Maintaining Competitiveness: Human Capital Development in Firms
  • Responsive Higher Education Institutions  – Strengthening Links with Industry
  • High technology Start-Ups and University Spin Offs
  • Nurturing Partnerships between SMEs and  Technology Transfer Institutions  
  • Institutions & Infrastructure to Meet Global Quality Standard

The Volume II of the Knowledge Economy Study was disseminated during the Forum. This volume focuses on  “Knowledge Absorption and Innovation in ECA: Links to Trade, FDI and Knowledge Flows” :
