| Romania joined the World Bank in 1972. Since 1991, the World Bank has financed over 30 projects, covering a wide range of activities. The Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) On June 13, 2006, the World Bank's Board of Executive Directors discussed the World Bank Group's Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for Romania for 2006-2009. The CPS, developed in close consultation with the Romanian Government, serves as a roadmap for World Bank assistance to the country. More on the World Bank's Country Partnership Strategy for Romania Loans and Grants To date, the World Bank has financed over 40 operations in the country for a total original commitment almost US$5 billion.
The Bank’s investment and Development Policy Lending (DPL) focus on three broad areas: Promoting the private sector and the growth of efficient markets. This includes completing the privatization agenda, improving infrastructure services, establishing a business environment conducive to investment and growth, and enhancing labor market efficiency.
Building public sector institutions and improving governance through civil service reform, improving public expenditure management and accountability, implementing the anti-corruption strategy and undertaking judicial reform.
Building human capital and improving social protection by improving the delivery of social services in health and education, and improving the pension system.
In addition, rural development and poverty alleviation programs aim at improving rural infrastructure, including irrigation systems, social services and the rural finance system, through a participatory process. Bank operations also aim to improve agricultural and forest productivity.
